A Bit About Us

James Barnes Associates Ltd, trading as JBA Surveying, are Chartered Surveyors in a multi-disciplined surveying practice based between Yeovil and Taunton mainly serving domestic customers in Somerset and Dorset.

Our commercial clients are to be found nationwide.

Since our establishment in 2009, we have provided clients with the necessary professional support they have needed to assist with many of their property-related issues.

JBA Surveying is dedicated to providing high-quality residential surveys in Somerset and  Dorset.

Many buyers still rely on a lender’s mortgage valuation, assuming that it is some sort of survey. It isn’t. The lender obtains a simple valuation of the property to make sure they can lend safely, and these are sometimes completed without visiting the property.

Home Buyer Reports

To Provide Peace of Mind

This RICS Level 2 report is the most popular type of survey, ideal for conventional properties built since around 1900 and without substantial alterations or extensions. It is the standard choice for most properties in a reasonable condition.


Along with a summary of defects, a Homebuyers Report can also include information such as how much the surveyor thinks the property is worth on the market, and how much it would cost to rebuild the property for insurance purposes.

Building Surveys

For a Comprehensive Investigation

An in-depth look at the property's condition, with advice on defects, repairs, and how to maintain the property. This RICS Level 3 survey is for larger or older properties, especially those that have been structurally altered or extended, listed properties, renovation projects and properties in poor condition, such as the cob house shown! Formerly known as a full structural survey.

We can investigate a particular building defect and provide an independent Single Defect Report on the issue.

Residential Valuations 

Market Valuations for Residential Properties 

We provide market valuations for Help to Buy and Shared Ownership purposes. We also offer RICS Red Book Valuations for taxation and can act as a single or joint expert in court proceedings.
